2020 Sawtooth on the Solstice Rules.

What and When.


With Covid on the loose we must make special precautions. We don't don't know exactly what the lock down situation will be June 20th. If we can, we will proceed as follows.

  • This is an unofficial group ride. There is no registration or entry fee. You are officially on your own.
  • Click on the maps on the previous page or following links to download GPX or other files for you phone or GPS. Standard course, Harder course. See cue sheet below.
  • The course won't be marked, swept or include any medical support. You may have a friend drive and wait but please keep traffic to a minimum.
  • Riders should stay spread apart and avoid drafting if the person ahead decides to blow their nose! #Covid.
  • There will be one or more vehicles near the half way point. You may leave a drop bag a the start to avoid contamination of water and food sources.
  • 7am June 20th Leave from the bridge at the Gunnison white water park.
    • Ride west on the frontage road and then on the highway to McCabes Lane.
    • 2.8mi turn left on McCabe's Lane. Turns to dirt soon. 
    • 6.8mi Stay Left on Willow Creek Road
    • 9.6 mi Turn Right on rough dirt road for 1 mi. May have to walk for 100meters.
    • 10.7mi Turn Right on Pole Creek Road.
    • 13mi turn Left on Willow Creek Road. Climb on.
    • 16.86 mi Turn Right on short steep road to Highway 149
    • 18.6 mi Turn Left on Highway 149. Short climb and Very fast descent to powderhorn. Watch for deer, rocks and what not.
    • 26.5mi Turn Left at Powderhorn on dirt.
    • 42.3mi Turn Left at Cathedral.
    • 43.5mi Stay left to Los Pinos Pass.
    • ~48mi Auto support will either be at the top of Los Pinos pass or just past the summit.
    • 49.2 mi. Stay straight (left). If you are in for a bigger day turn RIGHT, climbing up to 11,500ft and staying left at one main road junction until you return to the shorter loop. 114mi total once you return.
    • 66.6 mi descend and turn left on wide dirt road back to High way 114.
    • 70.4 mi turn left on highway 114.
    • 78.3mi turn left on Lick Park Road and climb
    • 87.3mi Stay Right on sharp corner. Road to left is access to Sawtooth peak. Descend all the way to Gunnison!
    • 102.3mi Arrive at white water park.

 2021 Sawtooth Solstice Showdown JUNE 19th 2021 CLOCKWISE! Join the 3rd Annual Sawtooth Solstice Loop! This year we will revert the direction to the clockwise vs anticlockwise.  This is an unorganized event! You are officially on your own. There is no registration fee or official support. You are also in the backcountry with no cel signal or support.  There has been in the past a car at the mid point with drop bags/water.... Details: 7:30am JUNE 19th 2021. Park or ride to the white water park in Gunnison. This is just past the turn off to Hartman Rocks as you head West out of Gunnison. 103mi. Start: At 7:30 am we will ride over the pedestrian bridge and head south towards Hartman rocks.  Cue Sheet -The mileages are with in a tenth of a mile. If you are near a road and we say turn you most likely are at the turn. There aren't many options. 2019 Sawtooth On the Solstice Showdown. Keith Fisher (a local carpenter and bee keeper) and I (Jarral Ryter) decided we needed to find a loop that would make a loop around a small mountain called Sawtooth Mountain to the south of Gunnison. We looked at maps. Tried to determine public access and rode many dirt roads and hiked through a lot of forest and sage fields. Alas, we found a pretty good loop that could be done in a day easily enough mostly on dirt and very remote. Sure there are some places you could take smaller roads (if you could call them roads) but they would make the ride more of a sufferfest. For the 2019 solstice, we headed out of town on Gold Basin road from the bridge at the whitewater park at 7am. The ride was just lovely as 12 or so of us gathered on the pedestrian bridge at the white water park in Gunnison and headed south on Gold Basin road.
